 Reflection One

Kellen Healey

This week was very hard and took a lot of work. It was very time-consuming and required lots of determination. I had to get there every day and for some days long hours.

The first day I got there was pretty easy. I introduced myself to everyone right away. After that, I was taken on a tour around the building and shown each of the rooms. The building was split up into multiple different places, A side B side, Family, and isolation. There are a few other dog cage rooms. Then I saw the vet room and the room where the pregnant dogs were kept. After that was ‘Mikey’s’ room. Mikey was the cat that kept the mice away from the dog food. In that room is where we keep all of the dog food, treats, toys, and blankets that are donated.

It is important for the shelter to revive donations as recently they had to throw away lots of items. Lots of food and materials were lost since they were contaminated by sick dogs. This means that they were low on supplies and luckily people helped them.

After hearing this story, and once the rest of the cleaning group came in I was shown how to clean the cages. First, we had to make sure there were no newspaper or water buckets in the cages. Then we had to set up the carts to put chemicals in for cleaning. After this, we sprayed down the cages and cleaned them with paper towels. This took a very long time as there were lots of cages. Once we were done with this we covered them all in newspaper and added new water buckets. This way they would be ready for when the dogs came. This process Tom a couple days.

The next day was to take care of Mikey and do lots of laundry. After that, the dogs finally came. However, there was a problem with the transport so the dogs came in the afternoon instead of the morning. Once the dogs arrived one by one we took them to the vet and put them in their cages. This took quite a while as we had to keep cleaning out their cages.

The next day all the people came to pick up the dogs and I was sad to see them go. In the morning before they came we gave them one last checkup and then handed them over to their new owners.
