day 13

Image
Today was my final day working at the shelter. It was good to see all of the dogs and workers one last time before I left. Today was another adoption day which meant lots going on. Unfortunately, I had to get ready to go back to school so I was only there for the morning shift. Still, there was lots of cleaning to be done and preparations. I had to bring down lots of dog food bags to give to the adopters. We also had to bring all of the dogs to the vet one last time as well.  After all of this was done  I said my goodbyes and left the shelter to get ready to return to Proctor.  May 23, 1:45  3 Hours

Day twelve

Image
Today was an easy day at the shelter. Since I already have most of my hours I only went for the morning shift. We cleaned out the cages today but since there were not many dogs this time it was easy. After cleaning out the cage we mopped all of the floors in the shelter. After this, I prepared the food for the dogs and brought it around. It's funny to feed them because they get very excited and send the food flying everywhere. once this was done all we had to do was take out the trash which was also easy.  3 hours, May 22, 11:3 0

Reflection 2

Reflection Two Kellen Healey May 20th 3:45 This week was better than the last as I was more prepared for what to expect. However, there were still some surprises. As I came into the shelter I checked in on all the dogs as usual. As I went around the corner and entered the room where the pregnant dog was, there was a girl on the ground taking care of her. As I got closer I noticed the dog was giving birth in the shelter. This was the first time I had seen puppies that young and it was really cool to see her taking care of them.  As well as seeing the pregnant dog give birth I went out and got water for the employees and dog treats for the shelter. We are not allowed to drink tap water so we need to use bottled which is why that is helpful. I also collected old towels from around my house that I could donate since the shelter is always in need of new towels. This helped me complete the goal of helping the shelter and becoming closer to the workers and dogs there.  R...

Day eleven

Image
Today I gathered some donations and brought them to the shelter this morning. I got towels, dog treats, and water all for the dog shelter. After bringing these in we had to get ready since the dogs were getting adopted today. Same routine as usual, cleaning and bringing to the vet. I was sad to see the dogs that I liked go but happy that they had found homes. Tomorrow is most likely a scrub day and I will also make a ad for the shelter if there is nothing else to do and work on my paper reflection.  9 hours May 19 4:00

Day ten

Image
Today I Started the day with opening the door to a puppy on the loose in shelter. After putting him away and cleaning up after him I began the usual cleaning. Since the dogs came on Wednesday instead of Thursday they are going to be adopted tomorrow instead of Saturday. The dog that was pregnant had nine babies last night and returned to the shelter early this morning. The babies are all very cute and there was no runt which is good. The dogs are all very cute as usual in this group. Tomorrow we will take them to the vet and then give them away which is exciting.  9 hours  May 18 10:15

Day nine

Image
Today new dogs came again! However, one of the dogs is pregnant and started giving birth. This was ok but then there were complications and so the dog had to go to the vet. There were 42 puppies at the shelter today so it took a long time to clean out all of the cages over and over. We even had to use the upstairs rooms for the cages since there were so many. Then we fed all the dogs and prepped the pregnant dog's cage for her return tomorrow. I think that the new babies will be very cute.  May 17 9:44pm  9 hours

Day 8

Image
Today was an easy day at the shelter. We took care of Mikey, changed his water and food. Then we added new towels into the washers and dryers. After this we spent some time folding laundry that had piled up. This took a while but we got it all done. Then we put up the pictures on the cages of where the dogs were gonna go. We also put up the list of dogs as to what cages they go to.  May 16, 12:33  3 hours

Day 7

Image
Today was similar to the first day. We went around and sprayed all the cages with chemicals. Then we washed them out with more chemicals. After that, we dried all the pens and laid down newspaper over all of them. After this was done we went around and attached buckets for water to all of the cages. Of course, we took care of Mikey as well as the laundry. Tomorrow will be more prep for the dogs as well.  3 hours  May 15, 8:26pm

Reflection one

Reflection One Kellen Healey This week was very hard and took a lot of work. It was very time-consuming and required lots of determination. I had to get there every day and for some days long hours.         The first day I got there was pretty easy. I introduced myself to everyone right away. After that, I was taken on a tour around the building and shown each of the rooms. The building was split up into multiple different places, A side B side, Family, and isolation. There are a few other dog cage rooms. Then I saw the vet room and the room where the pregnant dogs were kept. After that was ‘Mikey’s’ room. Mikey was the cat that kept the mice away from the dog food. In that room is where we keep all of the dog food, treats, toys, and blankets that are donated.         It is important for the shelter to revive donations as recently they had to throw away lots of items. Lots of food and materials were l...

Day 6

Image
Today was a sad day at the shelter. Today we had an early start to start cleaning the dogs. We had to take them to the vet again today as well for final shots. After that, we put them in their cages and waited for families to come. Once the families came one by one we took the dogs out to them this was very long since there were so many. Once this was done we had to go around and clean. We took all the paper out of the cages and cleaned the toys and water bowls. 9 am-7pm May 13 8:03pm

Day five

Image
Today was similar to yesterday's visit except no new dogs. We had to make sure to go around a clean out all the dog cages again. After that, we put in the new sheets like yesterday and added some blankets. After this we put the dogs back, this was never ending as we had to keep changing the dogs multiple times. Then we fed the dogs and got them prepped for the night. Tomorrow we will get the dogs ready for them to be adopted.  Hours 9 May 12 9:11 pm

Day 4

Image
Today was much longer but easier than the scrubbing days. Today the dogs finally came and there were so many. We had to unload them off the truck and bring them into their assigned cages. After that, we went around bringing them water. then one by one we took them to the vet. Later we took them out on walks and another person would clean the cage while someone was walking the dog. We had to take out the old newspaper and clean it and then put in new paper and the dogs. We also had to make sure every dog had food and clean paper. May 11 9:42pm 8 hours .

Day three

Image
Today was an easier day than the past two. All I had to do was go in and take care of the cat that lives there, Mikey. I needed to clean out his food and water and litter box and then refill it all. After this, I started some laundry and put the wet towels into the dryer. I then folded all the towels from before that needed to be put away. After all this, I started to bring up donations of food upstairs. This took the longest as there was a large order of it in the shelter.  This was 3 hours today May 10th 2;46pm

Day two

Image
Today was much harder working at the shelter. We had to finish scrubbing all the cages in the shelter which took a long time. Making sure there was no debris on the cages as the dogs will be soon. We sprayed it down with chemicals that dry out the cages completely. after we sprayed we rubbed it down with the towels to make sure there was nothing left in the cages and they were all the way dry. We then covered them in the newspaper so that they would be all set for the dogs. Finally, we did some laundry which there is always some to do.  I was here for four hours. may 9th 9:42 pm

Day one

Image
Although working in a dog shelter sounds fun, spending all day with dogs, today was not. All I had to do today was to come in and help clean. For 3 hours I came in and worked at the shelter picking up. The dogs were not here yet as they come on Thursdays. So today the only animal I saw was the cat that lives there. I could not figure out how to upload a picture, so I will upload two tomorrow once I figure it out. We did some laundry and cleaned around the shelter. We also prepared and scrubbed the five sections: A side, B side, family row, playroom, and loft. Tomorrow we will clean the other areas.  May 8th 5:38pm
